Just use 5-30W. 5-20W is too light unless temps are in the 0*C range

5W30 - 10W30...both are fine.

There are people that run 20W-50 in mustangs.

i run 5w20 in my boosted 4.6, but in a 5.0 i'd stick with 10w30 or thicker...

I'd stick with 10w-30, AutoZone had motorcrap 10w-30 for less than 3 bucks a quart last time I was there. Thats what I run every time, with a Motorcraft FL-1A, as far as I'm concerned the best filter on the market for 5.0s.

theres really no reason to run a thinner oil than 10w30 in a pushrod engine, unless you live in alaska, the 5w30 will work lol

I think 5-20 was developed for the more modern engines...closer tolerances??? all I know is that in my 2002 F150 with the 5.4 when ever they mistakenly put 10-30 in it it knocks SO BADLY on every startup that I immediately have changed it back. The manual in big letters warns NOT to use heavier oil...so I'd guess the converse should also be true...especiaslly on my soon to be 150k 5.0 motor!

if your motor knocks with 10w30 the problem isnt the oil........

unless you live in Antarctica.

see em every day at the dealership. if its not the oil being too thick its the cardboard in the fram oil filter letting the oil by pass on cold start up.

fram is junk, like i said, if 10w30 makes it knock the oil isnt the problem.

that 5.4 knocks because the oil is too thick for the close tolerances.

Thanks MMoser...that is what I always thought...it really was bad sounding & I cringed everytime. Got it changed right away. So it makes sense on a looser tolerance pushrod with 150,000 miles that the 30 weights would be a much better choice.

in central north carolina. like i said, i see em very often. most of the time its the 3v 5.4s that do it because of the vct, but i've seen 2v 5.4s do the same thing.

i've never seen a mod motor knock on cold start when it has a motorcraft or wix filter on it, only with junk filters... and we use bulk 10w30 kendall in ALL the cars, we do however use nothing but motorcraft, acdelco, and wix filters... maybe the kendall bulk is thinner...

or maybe the 10w30 is too thick for the crap filters? thinner weight 5w20 with a cheap filter usually doesnt give a problem, its the 10w30 with a crap filter.

yeah, no telling, all i know is we use 10w30 in EVERYTHING, that includes a TON of fleet vehicles all using ford MOD motors, and i've yet to hear one make the slightest noise on cold crank, even while building pressure they are always very quiet.
