First I'll start off with the project I'm working on.
I have a '98 V-6 Mustang (that I got for next to nothing) with over 200k miles. I also have a complete 5.0L H.O. with wiring/ecu from a '90 Lincoln LSC that I wound up finding for $100. I plan on putting said 5.0 in the car over the winter, and have already figured out pretty much everything else I'm going to need to buy/do.
The only real issue I have is, I know the 3.8L transmission and torque converter will *fit* on the 5.0, but I have almost no idea how the thing actually gets it's input for shift-points and downshift. It doesn't seem to have a "TV (kickdown) cable" like older AOD transmissions do, so I figure it's probably electronically controlled using the TPS.
Does anyone know if there's a way to set this up with either the stock 5.0L fuel injection setup, or rig it to work manually if I decide to go carb'd? Fabricating brackets/housings isn't an issue for me, neither is ... "creative" wiring. I really don't want to get rid of this transmission and swap something else in there, since I like the way this one shifts and enjoy the O/D Off button feature and the ability to lock it into 2nd to start off with. It's quite handy on rainy/slick surfaces.
One of the guys at a local shop I sell to has done a 3.8-to-5.0 swap (carb'd) in his son's '96, but they switched to an AOD. They left the original computer/harness pretty much intact, so I figure if I did the same and found a way to get input to the transmission somehow, it will still function properly. Basically, I just want to know how the '98 automatic transmissions get their input.
Also, before anyone adds that the 3.8 trans is weak and shouldn't be used, I'll point out the engine I'm using is NOT going to be heavily modded, and I drive fairly conservative anyway (since this is my daily driver most of the year, and gets mostly highway driving). The biggest reason for the swap is mostly to retire the aging and fairly worn 3.8L for something a little bigger, and because I love the sound of a 302 with good exhaust.
