when installing crower stage 2 blower cams with their high lift valve springs/steel retainers, do I also need adjustable cam gears? I already have all of the degreeing tools
I would. You can dial each cylinder bank's cam down to a fraction of a degree of each other. A little pricey but worth every penny.
The OEM's 6* tolerance between banks is ridiculous.
I just put in a pair of Comp Cam adjustables w/ my Comp cam 270's. They worked excellent. Degreeing them was a snap. Word to the wise DO NOT USE THE LOC-TITE UNTIL YOU HAVE CHECKED AND TRIPLE CHECKED YOUR DEGREES AND FOR PTV CONTACT. more advice is to be easy on the hex head bolts on the adjustable cams, they will strip easily. Use an inch/trq wrnch.
If you go with the Comp cam 270's, they build 4* of advance into these cams. The spec card will read 109* CL you must retard it to 113* or you'll have PTV issues. Good luck.
One more thing, both banks will more than likely degree in at different numbers, the adjustable cam gears make this a ton easier, just make sure the timing chains are lined up correctly.
well my numbers will be a huge jump. I already took the car off insurance and ripped off the supercharger/piping/valve covers. This is what will happen over the winter before next spring:
Crower stage 2 non pi blower cams
high lift valve springs/steel retainers
adjustable cam gears
battery relocation
snow performance stage 2 boost cooler
big/skinnies
retune
I am hoping to be in the 475rwhp range through my built auto, 3500 stall, 4.10s
i just talked to my buddy from Blow By Racing, and he actually ust had a set (cant tihnk of the brand) blow apart on him. and he is now going back to oe gears.... thats the route im staying and will stay!
thanks for the advice. I think with the 6% off though I may be able to get the comp adjustables cheaper through AM. Plus I live in NJ and they are located in PA
lorenzo of lorenzo's fast flow cylinder heads here in PA ported my heads and suggested I use the comp cams adjustables and ARP hardware over stock rather than try to grind the stock ones as per the SHM instructions on my 98 stock cams. at jdm I did see a 03 cobra that had cams in it have a stock cam bolt fail and take out the whole front timing cover and cause a ton of damage, it was worth the piece of mind for the small expense.
the only adjustable cam gears i'd use in a modular are the Ford set that were available for a short time a few years ago and the mod camponents set. Fidanza suck and Comp are Fidanza with comp's name.
