alternator disassembly

anyone know how to take apart an alternator or if it messes them up or not? i just want to take the housing off so i can polish it, don't want all the metal shavings to get into the internals of it. so if anyone know how or if this can be done please let me know. thank you.

I think dalamar just got a new alt and swaped out the guts on his chrome one.
It's pretty easy to do. Hardest part is holding the brushes back when you slide the armature back into the housing.
And that's usually done with a toothpick or similar device
