aluminum flywheel?

Have a friend with a 621 hp '97 Cobra that has one. Not really "better" or necessary for a mild street car.

Depending on what modifications you have already, there are better ways to spend $400. However, aluminum flywheels are a "nice to have" and typically shave 13+ pounds of your rotating assembly. Other than cost, there is really no downside to having one.

Ive heard that it makes the car less streatable, like when you let off the gas pedal the car slows way down fast, and stuff like that. Is it really that drastic? Or no downside other than the cost?

^ it's not a mustang but, I had a 7 or 9lb aluminum flywheel on my probe and it was great. I didn't have any problems with slowing down too quickly.

Very good to know :thumbsup: Ive never had one, nor rode in a car equiped with one so I couldnt really make an argument with it. But the guy that said it has a built corvette (hes a dentist so he has some dough) like a 70s or 80s all built up. maybe that made a difference. Id assume having your rotating assembly balanced to like 0 or somthing would have a effect

I had a aluminum flywheel for 2 years. It was great, a small blip was all I needed to heel and toe (rpm match) on downshifts, throttle response was awesome, and the flywheel was tough as nails. drag launches sucked. Keep in mind the Aluminum flywheels are geared more towards the road race crowd where reduced flywheel inertia really helps. They also help your trans some, by not hitting it with as much force. as far as a street car, I cant see where they would really help. I would prolly have stuck with my iron flywheel if I woulda known it doesnt make much difference on the street.

i didn't like the aluminum flywheel, car did not want to launch at the track even at 7000 rpms. would bog just enough to screw up my 60' times. with the new twin disc i went back to a steel and have no issues.

thats my experience... if you like to road race then the aluminum would benefit you, if you like to drag race then the more inertia the better

Launching my z with the al flywheel did just fine. In some cases I could see it causing issues with it though.
