No not mine. Lol. Step son is thinking about buying one and found a 2000 GT that needs a trans. Anyone have a ballpark figure on what a shop would charge? I’m guessing 1500-2000?

Subject was supposed to say AODE...lol. But I found a few prices online. Seemed to be around 1800-2200 for stock build

I think that price may be a little low in todays world. A few years ago that was a $22-2400 overhaul on the bench. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see it around $3k. And if you’re bringing the whole car to them, you’ve got to factor labor for the r&r. That could quickly become a $5k job.

R&R would be done by us but he is looking at a few. One is a 2006 GT vert but it has 156,000 on it. Looks clean but $6500. Says everything works on it. The one with a bad trans was a 2000 for $2800

If you’re looking at any other s197’s stay away from the auto. The 5r55s is not a very stout transmission and will fail in stock form if beat on at all.

He pretty much would have to get an automatic. His wife will not learn to drive a stick and he wants her to be able to drive it too

I would definitely stay with the AODE. It is a stout Tranny. I understand the thinking that newer seems better, but that's not the case. Newer units are built lighter for saving material and weight. The AOD' was released around 1978 or '9 and was used all the way through '04. I used to rebuild all kinds of Transmissions, and when Ford introduced the 'AOD-E' it became even better, being it was Electronic Shift, getting away from the Cable Shift. If you go used, they should allow you to take off the Pan, so you can check for ANY Metal or Clutch Material and turn the Torque Converter over to see if ANY Metal flows out of it.

Oh, and if you put in a new Tranny Filter, put some STP around the Rubber Ring, and SLOWLY and evenly PUSH it in when you install it. One thing you don't want is a cut O-ring causing issues. Bob.

The 5r55s has a few issues. One big issue is that it is physically small. There’s only so many square inches of clutch material in them. Also the servo bores sometimes need to be sleeved. They can also burp atf everywhere and you can’t tell if it’s low or not because there is no dipstick. I’d take a 4r over any 5r trans any day.
