While the intake was off I was looking at the top of the bellhousing and it had the number 38 cast in it, what does this mean? Because I have a 96 and im really trying to figure out what trans is in the car.

You have a 4r70w if you have an auto from 96-04.

There was small changes in the valvebodys over the years and the v6 had differant torque converter than the v8 but thats about it

They are 3.8...but im not sure if that has any relation, the case isnt differant so it makes no sense to label them like that

Ok got another question here, what gears would a 20 tooth speedo gear be for? I just replaced it with a 19 tooth. Now my speedometer is reading about 75mph when I'm really going 60mpg... So I'm trying to figure out what gears are in there without having to pull the rear diff cover

auto's came with 3.08 gears.

Mine didn't, it had 2.73. The tranny don't matter when it comes to what gears you have, they were always options.

the 3.8L V6 4R70W has a different bellhousing than the 4.6L 4R70W

there are two different 4R70W's for the two engines

the 3.8L shares the same bellhousing pattern as the 5.0

my old V6's 4R70W was stamped "3.8L" on the bottom of the bellhoushing near the Torque converter access hole
