Has anyone successfully spray paint parts of there car? Preferably silver metallic? I have to blend some spray paint on my quarter panel where there is a big deep scratch and wanted to get some feedback before doing it

it can be done. Matching/blending would be the most difficult part but just like from a paint gun its all about the prep

Have you done it via the can? I noticed I can remove the paint with nail polish remover yet the oem paint doesn't come off from that why is that? Will the spray paint be permanent? Don't want it rubbing off

Like scott said its all in the prep. If its prepped correctly it will stand up just like oem. Years ago on moddedmustangs there was a user, I want to say his name was like Mcqueen, he wrote a writeup of how to paint a front bumper to match with a rattle can. He had pretty good results as I remember.

Yeh I'm searching for a good diy as I don't have money for a pro to do it and really want a nice looking finish if possible via the can

Prep and age of paint will be big factors. I had a large scratch in the 1/4 of my red Z28 back in 95. It was from jack knifing a trailer that was holding a buddies 302 while I was backing up. Damn blonde had my attention in the passenger seat... Anyhow, sanded it down a little, wax and grease remover and then used Duplicolor spray paint from Kragens. Base coat/clear coat. When I was finished you couldn't tell what was new paint and what was old. The biggest thing was the paint was originally in excellent condition and hadn't faded much at all.

your first step would be to see if you can find someone that can/will check your paint and can mix up a match for it and put it in a can. Otherwise the chance of finding an off the shelf set of cans that is close enough is slim to none. I had a place in phoenix that would mix and put it in the can if I had the recipe for the color so I just took it to maaco and got an estimate that included the color that they used a tool to measure and took it to them. I only did small pieces inside but put a good clear over it and it can look its not hard to at least match stock paint results. Paint fades and it can be more/less depending on how it was taken care off/location/ect so finding a perfect match with out a custom mix would be setting yourself up for failure IMO>

I painted my dads hood with spray paint, then spent a great deal of time wet sanding it and buffing it to a nice shine. It was all good except the paint was not curing well, and leaves landed in it, and permanently marked it. I will have to redo that project soon.

Base coat/clear coat? Did you clear it yet? That's what gives it the shine. You shouldn't even need to wet sand it to get the gloss.

When I sprayed my doors and my bumpers, I prepped everything at once. The previous owner had the damage repaired and it had runs in the paint. Well I scuffed the areas to be painted and had to plastic weld the rear bumper. Well the bumper got adhesive promoter on the bumpers. Then layed primer for plastics onto the adhesive promoter. Let the primer dry for 30 minutes and then layed the black paint down. It said to wait between 15-30 minutes before laying another coat. So I waited about 25 between coats. I think I layed a total of 3 coats down on each panel that got them. And 2 coats of clear. After a could of year the clear was showing bad fading. So after that any panel I have painted on my car or other vehicle I have owned. My mirrors and fender don't have clear on them. And neither did my spoiler until I messed up and dropped a big paint drop on to the spoiler and screwed up the paint.

Now onto the bad

Rattle can paint is not as durable as automotive paint. My front bumper shown more chips than the any other bumper I've had that was factory paint or painted in a shop.

if your spraying them in a garage or somewhere you can get the floor wet do not be afraid to put a good layer of water down on the floor. It will lock down any dust that is on it to keep it from getting in your paint and capture any pieces that might come off of you.
