man, i've been researching this too... looks like SVO is where it's at if you can find them
then streetflows new heads, but they're $2k
i'm going with pis (i might p/p cause i'm getting them SO cheap) and some comp cams 262s, which is kinda mild
i'm going for the same thing but i've got a 5sp and i'm going with 4.10s

I had on my auto 96gt PI heads/intake with VT Stg 2 NA cams and all the other bolt ons. I made 278rwhp/306rwtq and ran high 12s @ 105-6 on street tires. I also daily drove it rain, snow, or shine.

the PI swap with GOOD valvetrain, cams, and bolt ons with a great tune should make you happy in the performance part, still get close to stock MPG, and be reliable as a stock mustang.

I ran the comps with a 5 speed and pi heads. No ptv issues when degreed properly and you will not beat the PI intake manifold for money/weight/power HANDS DOWN EVER. with a stalled auto and 100 shot of with comp 270s and ported heads a good friend of mine ran an 11.6 i think
