Well its time to order some new rear tires and I have been hunting around for the best deal. So far American Muscle has them @ $154 a tire anyone else know of a better deal?

sumitomos suck. They came with the wheels I bought from a guy. Only good point was that it was fun/easy to slide the car around but they didn't last worth a crap either

Are you stuck on 315's. Maybe you can step down a size or two and still afford a quality tire. maybe a 285 or a 305
When your on tire rack comparing tires pay close attention to the UTQG code. the higher the number, the better the tire.
Anything over 400 with an AA A rating is a pretty good set of skins.
I'm going to need a new pair of rears by summer too.

Those Kuhmos probably the best one to choose. Very limited options with 315/35/17
I personally like the Hoosier Radial WET in hopes that it would supply a little bit of grip with the winter weather we get here because I drive it everyday, snow or not. We are expecting two inches of ice tonight as I'm supposed to leave for work. One thing about the 315 Sumo's HTR Z, the tread wear has been excellant for years now. I still got 1/2 tread depth.

I would say that is false...

that 400 is just a treadwear rating, the lower, the softer the compound. The higher, the harder the compound.

Softer = better traction

You cant have your cake and eat it. You either have rock hard tires that get no traction or a soft one that may not last as long but will hook.

So is that the problem with the cheap sumitomos LOL.

I had Nitto 555s, they dry rot in like a year lol. The 555R though I liked, i'd buy it again.

Interesting. I have BFG G-Force T/A Drag radials on it now and they were nice but didn't last for shit. Plus driving in the Rain was a scary experience

I never had any trouble driving my 555Rs in the rain and they lasted really good for a DR, I'm with you my BFGs you can almost see them shaving off as you drive.

That would make sense. BUT...

400 is tread wear
AA is for traction
A is for temp grade

it is possible to get a tire with good tread wear AND decent traction too.

I agree though. You gotta give a little to get a little.

I had a set of Kumhos on my car when i got it 5 years ago. And they didn't last very long either. But I think kumho went back and made some changes.

O, You can read the brochure?

lol jk

Thats how it is 99% of the time. Any tire that will hook worth a shit will have a soft compound. Any of the street tires that I have ran that would get any traction at all are less than 200 tread wear.

And we probably have different opinions on traction....many people love michelin PS2s. I had them on my car and the sucked...would spin at 80 mph.

I also have a high 10 second car but these kumhos hold their own almost as good as the 555Rs I ran before them on a 15 inch drag wheel.

Sumitomos seem to be such a bad tire that the manage to wear out on 15k miles and get no traction.

Theres a happy median which I believe the kumho xs and the nt05s are pretty solid for. They last a decent amount of miles and get very good traction.

Traction for your car and traction for mine are completely different. You've got twice the HP.

The UTQG code and be a good tool for those who drive they're cars year round, in all weather, and a want good all around tire that won't need to be replaced every year or 2.

Not sure if anyones posted this, or if the OP cares, but American tires and Japanese tires arent the same size as far as width goes. Japan tires are measured from edge to edge on the outside of the tire (part of the tire that makes contact with the ground), American tires are measured from edge to edge on the inside of the tire (part that seals against the wheel). That's why 315 BFGs seems wider than 315 Nittos, because they are.

Don't buy Sumitomos, seriously it's a waste of money.

Brakes and tires are two things I'll never go cheap with again on my car.

I can understand trying to get the best deal you can, but when you just buy cheap...cheap is what you get. And when it's something that is keeping my car on the road, I wanna know that its not gonna fuck me over in the end.
