So i've been messing with the timing lately. Forgive me first of all, With all of the cars I've owned i've never bought a timing light, no need. Anywho, been messing with the timing. Car has been doing better as I drive it more. It was backed off a good bit but sounded pretty good. Decided to power time it and it runs even better, however it runs like shit and breaks up like a mother down low. It lugs alot when cold like either its way to much fuel or not enough. It breaks up pretty bad. Runs great though, no pinging at all. Not to sure why but it lugs like hell. It goes away if you back the timing off, however it feels somewhat sluggish if you do back it off. To accurately describe the way it feels, is like having a crappy driving cam down low. The car lugs and breaks up sometimes. Stock cam, stock motor. Nothing spectacular. Not to sure whats going on with it. New dizzy, new everything. All new sensors except TPS and maf and o2's.

get a timing light. right now since its cool you can set the base at 12*. when it gets warmer, you may have to back it off.

are you running regular fuel or premium?

you really need to put a timing light on it. stock timing is 10btdc, mine is at 12 so i can use 87 octane and it will start pinging at 13. when you adjusted the timing did you pull the spout connector?

Yep, not my first rodeo but It seems to not want to cooperate when the cars cold. Pulled the spout did the dance runs fine when warm, or even warm outside. Just went and moved it around by the door before I leave work in a few, started up and didn't miss a beat. May just be more in tune for warmer weather lol. I run premium only, 93 every fill up. It's worth the extra 2 dawra's

advanced. since its happening X* before the piston reaches the top of its stroke before beginning the next cycle.
if its after it would be retarded since it would be happening late.

ah.... and retarding the timing can rob horsepower, right? but it may be needed if running higher boost on low octain fuel. .. .. right? lol. or am i just talking out my ass?

by retarding the timing you don't need to have it happen after the piston reaches the top just nearer to it. if you start running it at after the top of the cycle its just pushing the stroke late so you'll make less power but have a lot less chance of detonation but you'll have unburned fuel because you won't have the compression action helping the burn.

10 degrees advance?

Yep. No idea in terms of modulars but 5.0's typically came 10 degrees from the factory. A good bump to 12-14 with a factory motor is always a good improvement
