Camshaft movement

I installed the cam and thrust plate. The cam moves in and out a little bit. Should there be no movement at all?

I'm pretty sure a little is normal but it's been quite a while since I did mine. I remember mine having a tiny bit of slack somewhere. hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

A little confused here but the cam is able to move to be able to install/remove it..or are you meaning something else?

I already installed the cam and I notice there is movement of the cam forward and backwards and not sure if that is normal. I was thinking there should be no movement at all. The cam does spin freely but I'm worried about that forward and backward movement. In the pic, the bottom of the thrust plate, you can see that little gap. I was thinking maybe the cam plug needs to be pushed in more? But I looked at the cam plug and it is flushed even with the block.

yup, mine had a little play forward and back also. If my memory serves when you bolt the timing chain to it it won't let it move anymore.

Yes , pretty normal. Don't forget to degree the cam .

Do I really need to degree the cam? I don't have a degree wheel. I was just planning on lining up dot to dot.

A few months ago I bought a Cloyes timing chain (part number 9145) and today I tried putting it on and it does not fit. The teeth won't go into the chain nice and even. What timing chain should I buy that will fit?
