I've heard a lot of good things about this supposed "rattle can wonder". But I've also heard some horror stories. Everyone who has a sucess story tells me it takes patience and proper prep work. Everyone with a disaster story tells me that it will ruin your interior/exterior and will chip/fade/wrinkle/wash off. Does anyone here have any experience with Duplicolor products? Any pictures to back up your opinion?

For instance... I have a friend named Julio who was buying a really cute little civic hatch with an amazing deep black paint job with two pearl white stripes. The guy he was buying it from said he didn't know who did the paint but that he'd never had any problems with it and told him it buffed to an amazing shine. So Julio got in contact with the original owner to find out that it was all duplicolor. He'd done gloss black and then used the "Mirage" Ice to do the stripes, then used the "Effex" over it and then six clear coats. The paint was two years old when I saw it and it looked great...

But I also saw a Celica yesterday where the paint and clearcoat were both peeling after two days... Perhaps they just didn't prep?

And while "rattle-canning" my car isn't what I had in mind when I planned on repainting it, I thought I might ask for some more opinions before I totally shut out the idea.

i would NOT spray paint your car..

just do all of the prep work yourself.. sand it, fill in dents, get everything straight, etc.. and then take it to somewhere and have it painted.. do not cheap out on it and spray paint it.. you will hate yourself for doing it..

I've considered doing that as well. I'm gonna look into the cost of that later today.

I think Duplicolor might be good for interior work, but after thinking about it there's no way I'm gonna rattle-can my exterior.

Between this post and Steeda clone post I'm gonna be famous for posting before I think. ;]

duplicolor also makes quarts of paint you can buy at some auto parts stores. that could be what the orig.
owner meant when he said he used duplicolor. avoid spray paint at all costs! i would do like the mentioned above:
take your time and prep it yourself. then take it to a painter and have them spray it.

I used duplicolor on my hood, looked good, but now its in the shop getting repainted. duplicolor is a lacquer, so its not going to be as strong as enamel or urathane

Okay I guess Im the guy that has had success stories when it comes to using duplicolor!!!

it's all in the prep if you prep correctly by properly cleaning before painting and adhesion promoting any plastic and use light coats, let the paint flash and keep doing light coats you will end up with a DECENT! not perfect looking product.
I have used this with alot of success on small trim pieces, tail light bezel's, side view mirror's, and door handles and they have looked really good and even though applying duplicolor's clear coat is not required with some duplicor spray paints I have used them as an added measure against chipping. I will be painting my side view mirror's soon and will gladly post pics once they are done...
