I have 02 3.8 V6 Manual mustang with 161k miles. I have recently purchased a 1999 Vert 3.8 V6 Mustang with 181k for extremely cheap to use for parts. My plan was to take off the parts I need and also take out the engine and transmission of the 1999 to rebuild and put into my 02 when it goes. I was looking at the engine and notice some slight differences. I was wondering if the 1999 3.8v6 engine/transmission would fit into my 02 without the need to swap anything else over such as the wiring harness.

The harnesses should be the same. The heater hoses are different from 01+ if I remember correctly. They also call the 03+ a 3.9, though I don't remember there actually being any difference.

What are you seeing that you think is different?

Either way, if you pull the engine anyhow, just grab the harness - just in case. The head gaskets are the big issue on the 3.8 - and you're probably about due for them. The good news, they're really simple and you could easily do them in a few nights after work if one goes before you get the new motor built. You could always look into the 4.2 from the F-150, though I'm partial to that route.
