how much does it complicate it to do different parts of it black, or say do a pattern? Just wondering, because i've never understood how you would put it down on the valve cover.

It's really all a matter of taping/masking. If you want to do only a certain part, you have to mask everything else in this fancy hi-temp green tape that I have. I've not tried to do a two-tone yet, but I'm going to *gasp* attempt it on my upper intake manifold for the notch. I'm going to do a gunmetal gray and ultra mirror black combination. It is going to be a royal PIA, but I'm REALLY hoping it comes out nice. I figure it will take me the better part of a day to do it.

Hey paul what happened to the pics above? anyway, would you be interested in doing an altenator case in that matte black? Or if the cost and time is prohibitive, maybe you could post a few pics and some details on how to disassemble the Alt. and prep it so I can try and get a local place to do it and get a finish like that. Thanks

The pics were hosted on the old forum. I'd need to go through and re-host all of them and edit the links. (which I probably won't do)

Doing the whole mail-order powdercoating doesn't usually make much sense due to shipping costs - a local place is your best bet.

I don't have an alternator to disassemble right now. I tried doing one for a buddy of mine, but it didn't want to come apart easy like they usually do... so I decided not to do it. I didn't want to damage it if it didn't feel like cooperating.

No problem man... I think I might have a line on a 94-95 car being parted out locally so maybe I can source an alt. that way and then I'll just disassemble it myself and put my freshly rebuilt alt. guts into it. Did you do any sanding on the case to get that nice finish or did you just give it a quick clean it up in the blast cabinet? What about the engine brackets? Any tips for those pieces?

I blast it, then sand it down. If you want a nice finish, it's best to sand everything down. The smoother the part before it gets coated, the better.

I have a couple sets of 94-95 brackets that I've been considering smoothing, coating, and selling. I'm just not sure how much I should ask for them yet. They're pretty valuable just clean and blasted, and the smoothing/coating takes a lot of time.

Ok... cool. Sanding was done by hand? rotary tool?
A friend of mine just had an intake done and the other day I saw it. And where he took the E-brock name off of it was smooth but he didn't take off the rest of the as-cast texture on the rest of it and that came out kinda bumpy.

Yeah I too have been noticing how much people are willing to pay for clean 94-95 brackets lately. Pretty surprising... I'm gonna start working on my brackets and see what I can get out of them too. I have a friend that will blast stuff for me for just a few bucks.

I have a number of different tools. I have about four or five pneumatic die grinders, an electric angle grinder, electric vibrating sander, cutoff wheel, etc... My friend also has two CNC mills in his garage so if I need heavy material removal or very precise work he does it for me.

If you look in my notch build thread you can see some of the pictures of my work and get an idea of the general process.

Paul.
