Question on the subject... Could you not get the insurance company to cut you a check and then you take it where you want to and have them do the work? Or is this already a place that you wanted to go to? Just saying shopping around for different shops sometimes can help you save money too. It's not always the labor that changes from shop to shop, some places can get parts cheaper than others

I have no doubt that a 2nd opinion is needed but I am honestly going with the opinion that they will be totaling it. With that being said I will have the car brought home, buy a roller and start pulling parts off too see how far it goes. Get it running, have them tweek the frame back and then I can start putting her together again. There are a number of parts on the estimate that I know I can get of 1/3 the price and they priced the hood high enough that for a few bucks more I can get something different/cooler and get it all painted. Should give me a chance to smooth the chin spoiler into the stock bumper to make it look like one piece. smooth out the areas from the side exhaust to the fenders that has always bugged me, do the wire tuck I have been wanting too do and maybe a couple other little things like smoothing the antenna hole and some other suprises.

Got the call today that I was expecting, they are totaling it out. They have the value of the car as $4800 though which seems a bit low to me since KBB puts it at $5300 before any of the mods are considered. Now I know that I do not get a $/$ out of them by any means but strip the air-ride, motor mods and the exterior parts that are still good and you have a LARGE portion of the $4800 before you consider the car, not-that-long-ago rebuilt motor.... They want to cut me a check for $4k for me to salvage it. Is that stupid/good/ok?

These insurance companies have a lot of complicated underwriting procedures to estimate and assess the value of a car. What they're offering you seems pretty reasonable IMO. Take the deal. Use the $ to get the parts you need to fix that bad boy and you still should have some cash left over when it's all said and done.

yes $4k and I keep the car. I know that if I parted it out if I needed too that thee would be a lot to sell but I am really more interested in fixing it. Will take some time for sure but it would give me the chance to do a lot of little stuff I wanted to do before(wire tuck/smoothing out some lines).

honestly that seems pretty fair. Insurance companies use recognized resources such as NADA and market searches for values on cars, not KBB as it is not recognized. I think you have a good gameplan man and thats a pretty decent start

Yea it was totaled and I kept it. Started taking it apart yesterday. Got to the point I needed a come-along to pull the core-support so I can get the radiator out. Hoping to go look at a donor car tomorrow and if it has everything the way I hope I will be well on my way.

Glad you kept it Scott. As stated by others $4k isn't a bad tradeoff for a totaled car, especially since if you take the time to look around for parts, you might actually come out ontop. Pulling the rad support out with come along's is fun isn't it? Had to do that on a Buick once, we had to anchor it to my dad's truck then use a chain attachment with 4 hooks on it, and a hammer, and we got it pulled out and straightened out. Tho I suspect your probably gonna go ahead and replace it?

Lookin forward to some progress pics Scott! :)

Yes it will be replaced, right now I just need to pull it out to get the radiator out. A buddy is coming by later to help with it. Thankfully the weather is nice today. Still need to cut the fenders to get them off and holding off on it just because I don't want to screw it up really. I am going to cut them tonight I think and will just start up higher then where I am planning on them ending at so I can trim it back later. I can use the scraps to figure out the settings on the welder to get everything back together.
