like the title states this question is for those of you that are familiar with how the eec-iv computers in our cars work. here is my situation, when i bought my car the temp gauge wasn't working so i went ahead and changed my temp sensor on my car. that didnt work so i changed the gauge cluster, nothing. so finally i decided to just put in an aftermarket gauge in. when i put the gauge in i left the factory sensor unplugged. now would this affect the computer coming in and out of closed and open loop (the computer not knowing the engines temperature)? if you would this explain why my car doesnt run consistant? somedays it runs great others it feels like a slug. my mods are listed in my signature.

there are 2 temp sensors. one on the drivers side that his on the lower intake behind the distributor that has 1 wire going to it. That one is for the gauge.

There is another in the thermostat housing a believe (fox have them on the hard heater lines ) that has 2 wires going to it. that one is for the computer. You can disconnect the single wire one on the drivers side with no ill effects to the Eec.

Yea you shouldnt have any problems with leaving the stock one unplugged. Thats how mine is and its never given me any problems. I would be looking for the problem elsewhere. Have you cleaned your maf recently. Do you have an air filter that you have to oil that could possibly be getting the maf sensor dirty?

If you clean it and it works better, the maf probably isn't your problem. Probably over oiling your air filter; if that's not it then your air filter sucks.

The ECT sensor is what the computer looks at and it's mounted where the heater core lines mount to the lower intake. The gauge temp sensor doesn't matter at all to the computer, it's on the driver's side of the lower intake near #5 runner.
