So my mustang is a salvage which looks to had an accident at the right rear. It was for the most part repaired but there is a fuel leak somewhere and it is annoying. It does not really drip or leave a puddle, but it becomes apparent that it is leaking when coming from a stop (makes me think its at the front of the tank). You do not really smell fuel bad until slowing down, and I am pretty sure the smell is coming from behind. Where should I be looking for as far as lines and points where rust/damage would be common? I am aware of the filler neck and grommet, and they are in so/so condition.

Filter/clips are located right rear also. If you can position a dry rag in a couple of locations around there and drive around the block finding the wet spot on rag will get you closer to the area its stemming from.

look for holes drilled into the floor of the trunk as I have seen countless times where a lazy installer will throw ascrew that is too long to mount a box/amp/what ever and go straight into the gas tank. It will be fine until the screw is removed but as soon as it is out it is obvious that it went into the tank by the smell.

also on the back wall by the drivers side is the inertia switch to shut off the fuel in a wreck.

Finally when I upgraded my fuel lines under the hood I chased a leak at the connection by the firewall where it goes from the hardlines to the soft but that was easy to spot by the damp spot that would develope.

This is all assuming you have a 94 gt as I have no idea what your car is...

An update.

So I bought a new filler neck seal and replaced it. The old one did not have any tears just a lot of stretching. This may sound weird but it looks like I have the wrong filler neck. The OD is a lot smaller than one from a 94 that happened to be parked next to mine. I ran my finger around the seal and found the OD so small the grommet does not come around and stretch and seal against the neck.

Why is my neck so narrow compared to the 94? Do I have the incorrect neck? If so where and how much would it be to get the correct one?

I will take pictures if needed.

Edit: Having trouble finding a picture of a 98 filler tube. It looks like that is what is in my car (even though it is a 97).

If you still smell fuel, definately heed ttoc's advice. Make sure you check where the hard lines connect to the soft nylon lines just aft of the right front wheel well in the engine bay. I have read in several forums that the inner nylon line springs a leak into the outer shell, which is a foam rubber so you don't actually see the fuel leaking. But when it finally eats through that outer shell you have high pressure fuel potentially spraying onto your headers. I suspect that may have been the culprit to the engine bay fire in my car before I bought it. Lots of melted shit everywhere :angry4:
