I asked a shop one time how much to do a ring and pinion. The guy had just seen me roll up in my mustang washed and waxed and then gone in and sat down as if to wait. It was a tranny shop. He said "What kind of car" and I said that it was a Ford 8.8 diff with disk brakes and that I had all of the parts. He said "A Mustang?" And I said "Yeah." He came back with "Oh boy, that is gonna probably be 4 or 6 hundred dollars". I laughed, thanked him and walked out. If I had been getting gears in my Ranger it probably would have been $150. I knew he was going to try to take me for a ride when he watched my car park and then went in and sat down to wait. What a dick.

Yeah seriously that would have been THE time to go to 31 splines.

I would have, but I did not have the extra cash. It cost more than I expected, and it had to be done. I had committed myself to driving to Florida.

Motive makes Ford's gear's now...

And around here, 250 to 300 is the going rate for an install, not alot you can do about that, be a smart guy and not have gear's I guess. You either pay what they ask, do it yourself, or go without, pretty simple.

Yeah, thats about the going rate around here... every now and then you can find them cheaper. I found a guy who is opening a shop, said he'd do it for $200, and he had the gears to correct the speedo. however, i think i'll wait till i get back to Houston. my best friends dad will do it for a 12 pack of beer, and my help... he's a mechanic, so i have no worries, not to mention, he and his brother used to have some of the fastest home built cars in the Houston area... now he's got 2 Buick T-types, and his son (my best friend) has a Grand National that at one time was a DD that would run high 10's... :thumb:

My rear end cost about 900 Also

Auburn HD LSD
FRPP 3.73
New Wheel Bearings
New Carrier Bearings
New Pinion Bearings

My whole rear-end was Pretty much new except for the axles

Good setup although the sucky thing is that the auburn isn't rebuildable like the eatons are. Which is why I sold my auburn and will probably just buy the 28 spline rebuild kit. I'm not making enough power to warrant 31 splines I don't think...

If you guys are paying $300 for a gear install Ive got some ocean front property in Utah I can sell you. Maybe the price of the gears and the install being $300 if you buy them through the shop that puts them in. Shouldn't cost more then $150 to have gears done at a good shop. I had my entire rear end done for around or less then $300 Gears, axles, differential.

what did you have done?? if your saying you got gears axels and a diff and had it installed for 300 i want to see where you got it from ....because i cant touch axels for under 250 and gears are like 175 so please explain

Your TQ is whats going to be busting your drive train parts more so then your HP and it all depends on what your doing with the car. You can have a 500 HP street car thats driven easy and never See's the track or a 300 HP car that see's a lot of track time w/ hard lunch's w/ sticky tires. Id bank on the street car rear end lasting longer lol. Ive got the FMS limited slip 31 spline differential w/ Moser 31 spline axles and a axle girdle. I figure even if I do fry anything in the FMS unit I can just get it rebuilt.

im going to warn you those motive gears might wine. I had the ford racing ones which motive makes put in and they have a wine to them. Took the mofo apart 3 times and check it and everything was right with a perfect pattern. just to warn you.

I'd never use anything but FRPP gears. They don't whine at all and they're strong as hell. Wish they had some more ratios like 3.90 but oh well.

Motive makes the FRPP gears now. They are the same thing. I have Motive 4.10's and they don't whine.
