I found a junked 5.0 Explorer locally and i am pulling the heads off. the intakes are gone already or id swap them too, but for this install, is anything big needed? or is it a direct bolt on? also since the compression ration will be off, how much should i back off timing? i hear about 2 degrees will suffice with the right fuel pressure, but you cant trust everyone.

Thanks

The compression is not that big of a deal set your timing till it pings and then back off a bit.

The heads are a straight bolt on. Obviously there is a lot more to do but as far as the parts there is nothing you need to do to the heads specifically.

The heads are a direct bolt on, the headers will need modification (or buy mac shorties for P heads) and 90* spark plug boots. I think thats it.

Umh, no you just dont set your timing until it pings and back it off a little. You can lock your timing out or let the pill stay in and the computer work as normal. Set it to what the factory calls for, and drive your car. If you have a adjustable fuel pressure regulator you can play with the settings and get the most out of your car. Add timing, take away fuel and vise versa. I suggest you do some research before you mess somthing up. Good luck with it either way.

lol :tard:

Since Fords lousy bum PCM has no knock sensing capabiltiy. That is the best ways to setup a timing curve which out tuning. :tard:

I mean seriously..unless your an idiot and can't hear detonation or know what it sounds like then your in the wrong hobby.

Let me rephrase and explain more. Take the dist and remove the pill set it at 10, go out beat the fvck outta of it. No ping put it at 12 etc keep adding until your hear detonation then get out of it and I usually go down about 2 degrees

Pull out spout, set timing, put spout back in, drive car, PING yes- pull spout and remove 1 degree of timing, repeat
PING no- pull spout and add 2 more degrees of timing and repeat.

I figured I would just amend what you posted. To a lot of people this stuff is voodoo.

in which case simply bolting them on is probably a bad idea...

i would strongly suggest letting a machine shop pressure check them and check the deck surface for straightness before doing ANYTHING

If your getting them from a junkyard usually there cheaper then $200. I picked up my GT40P's and a TFS stage 2 cam for 260 locally. Only 4000 miles on the set.

i got my gt40's, upper and lower intake, injectors, t/b, and other junk i didn't use bolted to it for 30 bucks straight cash at a junk yard by me.. simply because i knew the guy that runs the place lol. but usually what they sell the heads for are 75 for iron and 100 for an aluminum for like a 4 cyl or something. that's per head. but check with them cause a lot of them will do a half price day. there's 2 or 3 down here that does half price tuesday or something and everything is half price. plus the one my buddy runs does a 50 bucks all you can carry deal once in a while. check and make sure they're not c4c cars and if they're already pulled and in decent shape i would get them. pulling them in the junkyard sucks.
