you can always set the number one piston to top dead center on the compression stroke and see if the balancer marks line up

yea, the HB prob spun. i noticed mine was after i R&R'd the dizzy. car ran good but the timing was way off, then i noticed the wobble in the HB. so it got swapped too. that bolt on the HB is f'n tight. hopefully you have a 1/2" impact. i didn't so i used a huge pair of channel locks to hold the old HB and a 3' breaker bar on the bolt. DON'T PUT ANYTHING ON THE PULLEYS, that'll screw them up.

The thing that got me when I replaced mine is that there is a washer on there, between the nut and the block - When I removed the nut, the washer stayed in place, and I put the puller on it (a novice mistake, but whaddaya gonna do?) - after 2 days of cursing and breaking one of the bolts on the puller I borrowed from AutoZone, I stuck my finger in there and pulled out the washer. I was finished with the job in 20 minutes after that. And the nut was on there TIGHT - if you have access to an impact wrench...well it saved me a lot of effort.

Spend the money and get some ford racing SFI balancer or Pioneer balancer. It is worth it and you sleep better at night.

When the balancer died on my '95 GT daily driver - I got a stock replacement from Ford for $69. Works like a champ.

If you don't have the tools or know-how to do it, this is a great job for a shop. They'll usually only charge you an hour labor, and they can zip it on/off in no time.

Paul.
