How big a job will this be? Knew it was going out, remembered last night. I am just buying through the town parts store. Is that fine to do? He says it is fine to drive like this. Just wonder how much this will cost me? Thanks!!

I meant to place this in the GENERAL TECH section.

How much knowledge/practice do you have with using a harmonic balacer remover? I did it myself and it wasn't that hard of a job, but I took the rad. out to make it easier. If you feel safe around the crank, it's not hard at all, getting the giant bolt in the middle of the HB is the hardest part, I had to impact it out thus, removed the rad to get the gun in there.

Drive like what, with the balancer bad?

Don't drive your car with a bad balancer. You want to save your bearings, not wipe them out...that is unless you want to do a rebuild soon.

I bought a Professional Products balance for about the same cost as a local parts store replacement and the quality is a lot better. :dontknow:

Ya you would probably want to remove the rad like mentioned. Just make it easier on yourself. Its not hard, just a little messy from the coolant.

Oh, I won't even think about doing this myself!! A lot easier for me to have it done. With my brain damage, it's all I can do to work a screwdriver, correctly!

I drive to do my in town errands maybe 2 miles. I meant it's OK to drive that for 2 more days. I won't take it out of town 'til I get this problem fixed. Been like this 3/24. I just remembered & thought about what he sad while under my car.

you want to fix it asap and not drive on it. it can ruin your motor.

also i did mine in about 15 minutes. take the belt off, take the crank pully off. then unbolt the balancer, use a pully pully to remove it from the crank. then put the new one back on torque it down put the pully back on and the belt and your done.

how can you tell if the harmonic balancer is bad? are there any symptoms beside the rubber going bad? i picked up a shake with my motor but i'm not sure if it was there before the change over or not as i went to polyerathane mounts on the trans and engine.

Uh, I can only tell you what I was told. My mechanic knows I am not that smart, hope this works for you. He said it was basically 2 metal pieces with rubber in between them. My rubber was starting to come out. I know this is not what you was looking for, sorry for that. Mine wasn't that bad, like I said got lucky to catch it.

couple of ways
With motor running- look at HB and see wobbling (how I found mine)

With motor off- from the ground looking up, look for rubber squeezing out of HB on the oil pan side

With motor off- verify timing. #1 on tdc, make sure timing pointer is pointing at 10*btdc (or what ever you have base timing set to.

You may only have 1 sign or all of them.
