if you have the access to a lift the bottom is waaaay easier... i helped a buddy of mine build a 5.4 dohc and put it in his car and long story short we had to pull it a few times now we can have it setting on the ground in about 45 mins..... but for a first timer should take about 1 1/2 hrs or so....

well you can pull it from the top but for a head gasket swap just droping it from the bottom will save you a ton of time...

+2 for dropping the engine out the bottom. I did a 01 Cobra rebuild, and it was much simpler that way. of course, we had access to a chassis lift too.

head gaskets arent that hard to change....if you have a non-supercharged 4v, just go off and buy the FRPP headswap kit for a little over $100, and that will include the head gaskets, head bolts, and new dipstick. the rest of the gaskets you need will cost you about $50 or so from ford IF you want to replace them...since you CAN reuse the timing cover gaskets (but i suggest you change them out).

i pulled the heads off a termie with the engine in the car.....took me about 2-3 hours or so to do....

the only thing is that i did have to take off the master cylinder to be able to remove the drivers side head
