Did you break the clip taking it off? Should slide back on and snap into place.

i don't think so everything on the shaft just keeps sliding back down when i try and push the knob on.

Probably broke the tab, my dad did that back when he was fixing it when my brother owned it. I went to cheap and less-stressful way, I got a billet one with a set screw :).

If the tab isn't broken, flatten (or"stretch") it out a bit and it should hold fine. They compress a bit when you take them off.

Same here. Went with the billet knob. Got tired of turning on the headlights and the knob coming back in between my fingers. So much easier to screw it place.
