Help: How to sand and fill body parts

I just got an aftermarket hood for cheap locally, I don't have the money to send it to the shop and have it painted green like my car. The hood is black and silver but it has some dings on it. My plan is to fill the dings, sand it down, and paint it flat black untill I get enough money for a new paint job. I'm not a pro at this, so what I want to know is what products to use, what filler, range in sandpaper, better spray paint? If anyone can give me a couple steps I'd appreciate it. Sorry if this belonged somewhere else

Thanks a lot sorry for the slow reply. I finished the hood myself, my friends said I did a really good job, I guess it's not bad for a first timer even though it took forever.
