Finally going to replace my old sound-making differential gears, they guy i bought the car from said there are 3:73s in the back but i just removed them and they are 4:10 gears..... o_O

oh well i have worked on it the whole day today and replaced everything and this is where im at right now, im wondering if they are set up good enough, i have been told if the pressure mark is in about the middle and not touches the edges it is perfect, just to let you guys know this is my first time doing a gear-swap. I have never done it before all i have a step by step guide from AM

going by eye, i don't have such expensive tools. I redid it today, still whining but less. I will have to do it again and get the proper tools

What gears are those? Were you loading the gear when you checked the pattern? What size pinion shim did you use? You have to set pinion depth and backlash.

Hope you get it figured out bro. I did my 3.73's yesterday. Night and day difference over 2.73's. Car feels like a freakin' beast. You'll be happy when it's all said and done!

redid it again today, with the proper tools..... still whining. Will they set after a while or will it stay exactly like it is now because it whines like before. If it doesn't i could of saved the 350$ and just left my 4:10s in it..

backlash was 0.009 which is in the 0.008 to 0.015 area and the manual said anything between there is good

Are these used gears? I'm told that it's difficult to get used ones to be whine free but then again I've had experience with a new set that whined. They at least could be exchanged.

They are brand new, and brand new bearings too. I set them up incorrect and drove for 20kms to test it out but whine was still there so i rebuild it to the now state. I don't know whats going on and it is really starting to piss me off.

Considering you said it got a bit quieter after changing it up, then i'd assume it wouldn't be your transmission.

What brand are the gears? How did you set the pinion depth? The backlash, while good on the measurement, if ran tighter can make more noise.

Gear Brand is Motive Gear, Pinion depth was .3

Did you look at the face of the pinion gear itself and set it to that height? How did you verify it?

The pinion depth is set before you install or do anything with the ring gear. What shim did you put between the pinion and bearing.
