So i went to install my Metco 6# pulley on my 04 cobra and i ran into a problem. Im thinking everyone's collective minds might be able to guide me...

I have to remove the front supercharger pulley. It is held in by a 14mm alen wrench bolt. well, Metco included the tool to remove it.
the instructions say "place the car in 6th gear, apply the e-brake handle, chaulk the rear tires, if possible, and have a fat guy sit on your brake pedal when you try and un-do this bolt."

... great... well my motor is out of the car, with no flywheel... so ive got 8 boltsback there and then the removal tool up front. those are my options...

I put a spacer on a bolt on the back of the crank (so the bolt wouldnt bottom out) and put a box end wrench on it. I wedged it against one of the supports on the engine stand and i started slowly turning the front bolt. the crank bolt on the back just kept tightening. THe last thing i wanted was to pull out all the threads on the back, so i stopped at roughly .75 turns on the rear bolt. i back out the bolt and inspect the threads. everything was fine.

back to square 1.

soooo... i pull out my pecker... i mean, impact gun. slap the socket on there... but its not strong enough. front bolt didnt even budge.

anyone have any suggestions?

Engine is on stand. no oil pan, no top intake manifolds, valve covers are on, all accessories are on.

thanks all,
Chris

Re: here's a question...

It took about 5 mins to get it off.

Re: here's a question...

put some tranny fluid in the impact to lube it up, keep hitting the bolt forward and backward, let the compressor build up pressure after a few minutes. might take a few times doing this but eventually it WILL come off.

its actually a brand new impact gun. (craftsman) and i put in lube since this was its first run... i used impact gun oil.
i sat there forever impacting the damn thing... i dont think this will work...

Re: here's a question...

well that sucks. what about 2 longer bolts in the crank and a pipe between the two bolts wedged to the floor or whatever???

the threads on the back of the crank are extremely fine... i dont know if ace or anyone would sell them... i might try it, if no one else has any other suggestions. lol. ill also shoot metco an email for tech support.

Re: here's a question...

you have an old flexplate laying around to bolt up and weld a bar that would be long enough to wedge against the ground?

i was going to mention an old flexplate, but being an 8 bolt crank they arent very common in automatics so i figured it was unlikely.

Re: here's a question...

what about clamping down the pulley on a c-clamp and using a breaker bar. Put two pices of wood in there to prevent thread damage, tighten it down and give it hell, should work.

that would be a great idea, except i dont ahve a welder... i could probably get 3 or so bolts from my old flywheel to line up okay (maybe) but then what? without a welder? i feel like we are on a good track here...... lol.

any way to clamp it to the engine stand?

Re: here's a question...

If you have a good drill and thick pipe you could bolt the pipe to the plate?? if the plate is scrap, if clearance is an issue use carrage bolts and countersink the heads?? PITA, but may work.

Re: here's a question...

Maybe i am lost. You are trying to remove the pulley on the supercharger correct? If so you should be able to use a clamp on the supercharger pulley to keep it from spinning.

the supercharger runs on a secondary belt, and I am trying to remove the pulley on the front of the crankshaft that the secondary belt runs off of.

here are pics, incase something got lost in translation.

pic #1: Both pulleys on crankshaft. one in back- OEM Harmonic Balancer. one in front- OEM blower-drive pulley.
Pic #2: zoom-in on blower-drive pulley's connecting bolt. 14mm Hex head.
Pic #3: supplied adaptor installed.
Pic #4: 19mm Socket on adaptor. ready for some TQ.
Pic #5: crank shaft bolts. 1 of which has my spacer on it.

Oh ok you are removing the crank pully gotcha. The same theory should apply. If you take a C clamp and two small pieces of wood you should be able to clamp it onto the pulley to keep the motor from spinning. And back it off with a breaker bar. The only other way I can think of is use a really long pipe on the end of a rachet. I thought those needed a pulley puller to get them off?

Do yourself a favor and get an IMPACT socket and not a chrome vanadium one made for hand wrenching.

See how the socket is all beat up from the torque of the gun? you're loosing a lot of torque through that area.

I can almost guarantee that if you get an actual 19mm impact socket(black) and give it hell on full pressure it should rattle off...

well, im going off Metco's instructions for install. and it says to remove x number of bolts, then use the adaptor to remove this one.

i had my 200+ pound co-worker out there with me today. ... We stuffed a ratchet in the front of the pulley and the braket that holds it. Then used two cheater bars to aply pressure. This was 200+ pounds on 5 feet of cheater bar! lol. im out of cheater bars.... ..

Ill try a c-clamp and some wood chunks, see if that works ;-) in the mean time, keep the ideas coming!!

i got some somewhere... i could only find my impact adaptors..... maybe ill ahve to breakdown and buy some more impact sockets... ... ug.
ill give that a shot tonight too.

thanks for the help guys! keep the ideas coming.
