I'd do a full tune-up first just so you can start off fresh, air filter, plugs, wires, cap/rotor, fuel filter, oil change, and clean sensors I.E. Maf, IAC.

3.8L problem~ you might have to double check the big three: Fuel, Air, Spark- Fuel filter is new(without muddy/rusty looking fuel when removed). air filter is clean, proper spark plugs(Motorcraft,NGK,Autolite, copper or platinum)
After that, maybe vacuum or air leaks: Check the three brittle plastic lines in and out of egr valve. Most of the vacuum lines originate from drivers side firewall and then branch out. If you have a CAI then check the rubber connecters at elbows and throttle body for gaps.
Lastly- Do regular Seafoam treatments to the upper intake manifold maybe every time you change your oil.
I would think that anything more serious than those I mentioned would produce a "check engine" light. I hope thats a little help.

how many miles are on it?
have you pulled codes?
could be coil, distributor, dirty maf, o2 sensors.
coils are fairly cheap so I would suggest changing it when you give it a tune up this time.

yeah I my check engine light doesn't turn on while it does it but could I pull any codes? the wires look new so I'm guessing the plugs are to not sure why you'd change the plugs and not the wires and the cap looks new as well there's another one in the trunk that's pretty dirty so i know that's been changed as well i did take it off the cap and rotor look clean so maybe its a sensor like you guys are saying i hope so but I'm sure it needs a tune i changed the oil last week thanks for all the help guys
