hey getting a 98 GT?

Hey i have always been a 5.0 guy but i am going to look at a 98 GT this weekend. Its triple black convertible, auto trans, with a few mods. The price is 5k and it has 130k on the odometer. What are a few things to look for when i got to test drive it? and what are these cars capable of? like what can the motor and trans handle?

Look for anything you'd look for in another car you're interested in buying. As far as how much the 4.6 and T45 can handle, just look through this section. Tons and tons of info here about OEM limitations.

The '96 through '99 had the plastic intake with the plastic coolant crossover. These are notorious for getting leaks on the crossover. If it's aluminum (just the crossover) than you are okay. If it's plastic, look and smell for coolant.

the coolant cross over is a good suggestion.

also, watch the coolant overflow tank for leaks.

the gasket on the gas tank where the filler tube enters it.

make sure the head light knob doesnt have a crack in it.



as for limitations:
the internals on the 4.6 can handle roughly 400 horsepower. many surpass this, but this is what they ball-park max at.

the Heads car trash. If you're hoping for a 10 second car with minor bolt ons and a blower, look elsewhere. the heads are the worst design ... EVER. lol.
im not very knowlegable about the automatic transmission. Ive seen stock T45s handle 500 RWHP before. but thats the 5spd...
