Home Stereo Question!

I know this doesnt have anything to do with car audio but I have cerwin vega home stereo speaker boxs. I dont know what the model is because i'm not up at school at the moment but they have a subwoofer, a mid level speaker and a tweeter in the same box. I have 2 of them and the woofer cone has just started to crack and sound like shit. I was just curious if these would be plug and play to just swap the speaker over.?

Car audio is normally 4ohms or 2ohms where house audio is normally 8ohms.. Alot of receivers have the capabilities to run either ohm setting tho

its not that easy really. I mean they will just plug in but at the minimum you need to match the nominal impedance of the woofer(4-8 ohms) but honestly each speaker has different peaks and will sound different. If the impedance is not matched you can do damage to your amp, if the peaks are different they may just sound bad.

Parts express does woofer repairs like what you described and on a speakers as common as CV I would not be suprised that it could be done. I have a pair of RE30's that I bought back when I worked at worst lie although they were quickly upgraded. Great speakers though and worth the time to get the proper replacement or the repair done.

haha they aren't hooked into an amp, they're hooked up to an old receiver from like the 80s or 90s and that is hooked up to our TV. I've never heard of parts express soo I have no idea where I would take them. Could you just buy like replacement cones for them? I feel like swapping cones is something that i could do on my own....

hmm thanks man! I think i'm gonna try to get a repair kit and do it myself. refoaming sounds pretty simple

Speakers have all kinds of ratings. The resistance, or in alternating current the impedance(nominal-impedance means the average impedance taken over a range of frequencies since this is alternating current) just tells us how much of a load it creates on the amp, or in home audio the reciever. The reciever is called the reciever just because it recieves the radio broadcast but commonly has the amplifier for the system built into it. unless you are talking a high-end componant system in home audio reciever=amplifier.

it is not all that hard to do it yourself. Part express is a large internet/catalog dealer of random electronics. You would have to send the speakers to them to have them repair them but They would also probably have the parts you need to do it yourself. A quick search will find them.
