this is how the strut towers on my 96 gt look I was very upset when I saw this as this is my 1st mustang and I had plans for it. how bad is this rust? if I were to clean it and undercoat it would that preserve it for 3 years or so? if not how long will it preserve it? the rest of the car looks pretty good rust wise and there's no cracks or holes as you can see. thanks for replies

Looks fine to me, but mind you I'm no expert. I live in Colorado (dry climate) and my mustang stays inside for the winters (and the last 5 summers, too..... .. )

Anyways, most of it appears to be surface rust. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the car due to the rust you've shown.

Really doesn't look all that horrible to me. I'd take preventative measures and wire wheel it down and paint with POR15

I'm going to have a buddy of mine wire wheel is and he said he will test the strength of it and see if it's weak. then spray it to preserve it. he said if it's weak he can probably weld a plate up to it. is that possible with the motor in tbe car still?

Picture #1 - yes, will have to move brake caliper temporarily and will need new nuts/bolts.
Picture #2 - no, will not needed a welded plate anyways.
Picture #3 - MAAAYBE. Tight spot, so it will depend on his welder and his flexibility. Also doubt a plate will be needed on this one.

hard to tell with all the fresh crust on it. Take a wire brush to it to get the crust off and when you can see where the metal starts you will know.
