havnt posted on here in a LONG time but now i have a question. I'm currently in the paint stages of my car and am about to paint the mirrors. has anyone removed the glass from the mirrors to paint them or do you just move the glass around and paint the edges?

I just pulled mine off...however, when I put them back on one fell off while I was driving haha so make sure you get them back on correctly.

1996 Ford Mustang Dealer Manual:
Chapter 01
Section 09
page 8
bottom left side of page.

continues onto page 9.

Glass, Outside Mirror:
Removal

1) Push inner edge of outside rear view mirror glass onto outside rearview mirror.

2) Grip outer edge of outside rear view mirror glass and pull out until outside rear view mirror glass snaps out of outside rear view mirror.

Installation

1) Line up locking tabs of the outside rear view mirror glass to the outside rear view mirror

2) firmly push outside rear view mirror glass into place with the palm of hand until it locks in.

Pull and pray is the correct method but if it is only for painting I would also say tape them off. No need to risk breaking the plastic pieces on the back when it is so easy to mask them.

here are a few part numbers if you decide to remove it and you break something:

outside rear veiw mirror housing: 17682
reatining nut: N62 1906-S36
mirror glass: 17k707

these are part numbers out of a 15 year old book... so they may be dirrent, they may be Ford's interal numbers, they may no longer be produced... im not 100% sure.

I had mine removed a few months ago to be painted. Two weeks ago while driving at night I hit a bump and it fell off on the passenger side.

I too say tape the glass off, less trouble......

Masking should be enough, but be warned, there might be some noticeably not painted areas inside the mirror areas.

However, if you really want them out, I'm sure a small bat can handle the job. XD

Haha for some reason I had a stupid moment and forgot about moving it around... Wellll whatever the case, they guys that did mine apparently didn't think about it either. Oh well, it was cheap and is sparkly.
