i have a mystery cam in it, and was wondering if there is a ....'easy'....way to check the lifts/durations/whatever without taking it out of the engine itself. i need new springs and would like to know so that i can buy the right ones. or would it be easier to just go with a new cam? :)

It's called a "degree wheel". This is a pretty cheap one but it will give you an idea of what I'm referring to. This will get you lift, duration, lobe seperation, centerline, EVO, IVO, etc. Just about everything you need to know.

You will need a degree wheel, also a few other tools, a wheel is a GUIDE but you will need to do math to get the exact number.

Pulling the timing cover off and then just snatching the chain off real quick is even easier. Just look at the numbers on the end of it generally speaking. I assume its got a fair amount of lope to it? More then likely its just a basic OTS cam that most of us could tell just by hearing it.
