Well here she is, Ms. Macy our 4 year old red Dobie.
dlv8Zlc.jpg

She goes everywhere with us in the Xterra, but in the summer time the convertible is Her car. I wish I had pics of what she did to the '98...Jesus. I bought the car with a few minor rips in all the cloth seats, which over the course of a year became chasms. She didn't eat it, just her weight, long nails, and constant movement beat the $hit out of the interior.

She likes to stand with her two front legs on the center console, two back legs in the backseat, and her head popped over the windshield, lips-a-flappin' in the wind. Which has made her famous in our small little town. She brings smiles everywhere we go, which is why dog proofing the new Vert is essential.

So, since I've bought the '95 I haven't let her ride in it for fear of destruction of my leather seats, and center console. I keep the car immaculate at all times, dirty Mustangs irk me. Spring is rapidly approaching, and the convertible dog is getting antsy. I need to start dog proofing to keep this thing clean now, any suggestions would help!

tl;dr: Help me doberman proof my ride, please!

Thanks a million fellas!

Back seat wise, you can put a blanket over the seats, then on top of that,a seat cover from like pep boys or something. Wont look great, but will help from damage.

I was going to say delete as well. And then build some kind of stand for her so she isn't using the center console that you can just lay on the floor.

put a rear seat delete in it when she rides with you

I took this as you want them to put it a rear seat delete when the dog rides along and then take it out when they are done. I don't think that's what you meant but that would be rather time consuming everytime the dog would go for a ride. A rear seat delete is a great idea if you don't want to utilize them anymore.

One of my friends uses a real heavy canvas cover that he drapes over the rear seats to keep his Golden from tearing up his leather. A blanket would work but I can still imagine the dogs nails can still puncture a blanket or be torn leaving an open area where the dogs nails could still attack the leather seats, the canvas would be a little more rugged. As for the center console I'm sure a cover could be done to match the canvas rear cover that you could just throw on top.

sell ya my cloth rear seat for cheap so ya don't have to worry about it. You can always get a cover made for the center consol that just slides on/off.

I am in southern indiana, the seat was used maybe 4 times before I took it out its grey cloth. The lower portion is honestly easy enough to swap out once you know how that you could easily keep a seat on the side for him.

With the size of it shipping would be the worst part, greyhound would probably be our friend there. As long as its worth the 20 min ride to the station to ship it and it helps yer dog enjoy the car we can work something out.

Just don't let the dog ride in the car. Problem solved. I'd never even think about letting a dog in my car, or my house for that matter.

Instead of using clippers on the dogs nails, use a dremel. You can get the dogs nails shorter and with no sharp edges. My wife is a dog groomer and that is what she uses on about 80% of her customers dogs. Do That with the other precautions mentioned and you are set.

This one falls into that 20% category, where the mere sound of a dremel sends her fleeing.

I think I'm going to get some canvas, double it over, affix it to the seats, slap seat covers on, front and back, and call it a day. Maybe put some cardboard in between the canvas and seat covers.

I'd almost think, instead of cardboard, one of the cheaper, stiffer, foam mattress covers, cut to fit, might be a better 'filler' layer that would make the coverings slip around less, and provide some give, even if the covers don't hold up, before there's any risk to the seat.

The only animal I ever let ride in my car was an ex-girlfriend... and even she did a number on the interior. Keep the dogs out! But if you must... I suggest going to a junkyard and getting a cloth rear seat, and replacement side panels. That dog will beat the hell out of your car.

What a cutie!!

We have 4 pooches, and they're all a part of the family. When Mandy takes them out to the barn she covers the interior of her Expedition with some heavy blankets. I did see mover's blankets at Harbor Freight yesterday, would be perfect to tuck around the rear interior and would be easily removed afterwards.

The dogs nails should be pretty short. That would be the first step, unfortunately if they're long you can't just clip them real short because you could possibly hurt the dog.
They have a vein inside them that will extend when they are long and resend as they get shorter.
You could see a groomer about getting them shorter or play with the dog outside and they'll wear down naturally.
