How to tell if it's a PI Intake??

Well, i got this car and the guy gave me the old "My uncle owned this car in FL, he was 77+ years old" story. I bought the car sight unseen (well traded one of my motorcycles for it) and it has things done to it that I doubt a 70+ old man would do... like an O/R H-pipe (loud as all hell and sounds like shit) and an aftermarket cd system. I'm thinking it might have a gear as well but not sure untill I pull the cover.... just wondering how to tell if it's got a PI swap done? The intake has the alumnium crossover on the front, just wondering if there is any way to tell if it's a PI from just looking at it such as markings or anything?

They have larger runners than the NPI. Post up a pic and I can probably tell if it is or not..and I am sure someone else could.

Some time zone
even tho it has the aluminum cross over, its prolly an aftermarket stock replacement piece that they made when factory intakes would crack.....

if its an NPI intake manifold, the front-most runner will be going to the #1 cylinder. if its the PI intake, the front most runner will be going to the #5 cylinder.

That made things a lot easier. it's pretty difficult to see under there, but it loks like it's a stocker NPI..... :puke:

Thats gonna have to go........

Yeah, the one farthest forward (from what I can see under the damn bracket) does to the front port on the passenger side head.

are there sensors tapped into that runner or is the other end of that runner hooked up to a hose? if it is, then thats not an intake runner, its the coolant passage. there shouldnt be any brackets above the #1 runner. but considering the one you are talking about (if it is the coolant passage) is all plastic, im about 90% sure its the NPI one anyways.

oh, and since that coolant passage is plastic, i would replace it. that part has been known to crack and leak (more like pour...) coolant out. the newer PI manifolds have an aluminum crossover, but some of the older style ones (99 and 00 i think) still had a plastic passage. you will need to tap an extra port in the aluminum crossover for an extra sensor tho (PI cars only use 1 sensor, NPI cars use 2)

NO, it has a alumnium coolant runner, thats why I was a little suprised, it's a 96 GT w/build date of 8/95.... I did not think they used the alumnium crossover untill later on??

I will take a pic later today and show you what I mean.

ok, cool, just making sure. and no, they didnt start using the aluminum crossover until the later years, after 98 i think. they did produce a revised NPI manifold with the aluminum crossover that was used as a recall replacement on 96/97 models. when i bought my car, the guy told me that he had already had to have it replaced from ford because the all-plastic one cracked. worked out for me, when i bought the PI intakemanifold, i just swapped over the crossovers (6 bolts on the bottom side) and that meant i could re-use the NPI alternator bracket and i didnt have to tap the crossover for the extra sensor.

BINGO.... it has had the recall done going by the tag placed by the Ford Dealer on the rad support..... just called them and they said that was it!!

Anyone know what the hell the "hole" is for under the TB though? Did your cars revised intake have it as well?? Here is a pic......

MADE IN USA
PATENT PENDING

yeah, thats exactly what i was going to say. the only intake manifold i know of that has holes in it like that is the Dorman Intake manifold. from what i hear, its a POS and you should get rid of it immediately. well ok, its not that bad, but ive heard they kinda suck, have fitment & quality issues, but then i have heard of them actually lasting for awhile. i say get yourself a new PI intake (FRPP MSRP is $200) or get a used one (as cheap as $20) and go from there.
