I`ve had my GT a year now and the only thing thats bugged me is the fact that it has a hood scoop that does f*ck all.

So. I now have a hood scoop that although isn`t a shaker, it serves some sort of purpose.

Took the heat cover off and removed it. This was underneath. (below)

Took the honeycomb `fake grille` from the scoop cover and drilled out every hole then put it back in. (below)

Drilled a hole in the corner of the hood blanked panel and used a jigsaw to cut out the panel piece. Used a file to smooth off and make perfect.

This is the view through the cut out. Straight onto my plenum. (below)

Cut out the appropriate heat space in heat shield/sound deadening material to allow air in/heat out. Taped up with correct heat proof alloy tape. (below)

Same tape was applied round edges of cut out and new modified hood scoop added before heat/sound proofing under hood. Gap was then joined with the tape for neat job. (below)

Car now looks EXACTLY like it did before but now that scoop serves a purpose (albeit a small one).

Took the car a good run. Lifted hood to check for dead insects on my plenum. None. BUT. Plenum wasn`t roasting hot like it normally was so that can`t be a bad thing.
I mean a cooler Plenum must be of more benefit than a hot one? Thats good enough to justify the 2 or 3 hours work. That and the fact now i feel its not sitting there on the hood doing diddly squat.

Comments welcome as I might make a few slight alterations. :tongue3:

great, now do it do the rear break ducts, put on horozontal brake lights and slap a pushrod in it and you will be just as cool as the 94-95s! :)

Nice work and although most may not notice, you know it is now "functional". In fact, the scoop looks better now for some reason - no joke.

Thanks guys. Nah, no one will notice but then again I have the only mustang in the area and I didn`t like the idea of someone pointing out my `fake stick on scoop`.
I mean if it was on any jap car it would be a huge joke.

How come the hood is super shiny in one pic, and super faded in the other? Am I looking at wrong?

Just fibreglass dust from all the cutting filing and sanding. I covered the engine with a yellow jacket you can see in the pictures to stop most of the powdery dust from messing stuff up.

Aaaahhhh. I see what you mean. Crappy camera phone from a different angle there too. Looks like reflections as well as dust.

You do realize that while you think you made it "functional", you didn't do anything but make a mess?

There's a couple things wrong with people cutting the scoop to make it functional:

That hole is nowhere near the air intake.
That hole is in a low pressure area of the hood, so it can't suck air in anyways.
It's in the wrong place to really make a difference on underhood heat.

Nice job, the work looks good, but there's nothing "functional" about cutting the scoop out.

You`ve said " Nice job, work looks good but you`ve made a mess" ?

I`m well aware of what I`ve done and why I did it. I explained it clearly and I also know where the intake is and how it functions but the `air intake objective` wasn`t my intention here. Thanks for your comment anyway. Its a public forum so I`ll take the rough with the smooth. :)

Enter engine compartment corrosion... Bravo

I can see where you`re coming from but the car is only used in dry weather. Where i live I`m more concerned with corrosion underneath to be honest.

:) No matter my cynical comment, I'm glad you did it. Non-functional scoops are like fake boobs without nipples!!!
