Thanks for your replies. I found a new old stock controller and that cured the problem. I am surprised how many of you choose to delete rather than fix!

I cleaned my IMRC's and had Mark test my controller while the top end was apart. He verified mine was working correctly so it was reused. That was in 2017 and it has been working fine since. Mark had suggested that I add a oil catch can to reduce the amount of gunk that accumulates, which I added that same year.
