Is my rear end toast? I was Driving home when I heard a loud pop. Abs light came on. A bunch of smoke came out the rear driver tire. The car still moves, doesn’t make noise. When I pull the tire off, I realized it was the axle or differential. I’m able to move the entire axle. Could it just be a wheel bearing? Idk lol

Well if the car still moves that is good news, when you have the car in the air and take the wheel off, how can you move the axle? In and out? Does it still rotate smoothly? How does the other side wheel react?

The fact that the car still moves good without noise is a good thing, but the ABS light coming on is probably related to the wheel speed sensor/reluctor wheel on the axle. Check those and see if you find anything like missing chunks for example.

If you don’t find anything, pop off the diff cover and check the condition of the fluid. That can tell you a lot.

Could be anything! Just have to be creative while you’re looking.
