Check the wires, could be as simple as a bad connection

We need some more information. Is it the Mach 460 sound system? Like joekd said, it can easily be a connection problem, however if they sound absolutely fine when you first start the car then they start to "crackle" there might be something else wrong.

OK, 94, they still had the crappy stock Ford stereos of the time. You could have one of a few problems.

First of all what kind of connectors did you use to connect the wires, twist nuts or crimps? Reason I ask is twist nut connections, while OK for in home electrical systems, aren't the best for car stereos and can cause problems, crimps are a sure fire way to prevent problems like this "when done right." Also doesn't hurt to seal them with shrink tubing, but that's overkill.

OK, check your front/rear L audio connections at the stereo, make sure they're tight (if you used twist wraps go get crimp on connectors).

If that is good, then check your connections at your speakers, could have a problem there.

If that's good you could have a short in any one of the L side wires, or possibly a short/failure in the deck unit itself that is causing the problem.

Lastly and lest likely, the speakers could be failing.

Trial and error always works.

Mach 460's have the tweeters in the window corners on the doors with "Mach460" on them.

Maybe thats why dad got a new HU............

If you didn't change anything but the HU, thats a good place to start....

I disagree as if they start off playing ok, and then develope static I would be more inclined to think it is some wiring or something which means even with new speakers it might repeat it.

I would pull the deck and double check all you wiring. Make sure there is no bare copper showing on any of the wires. What kind of connectors did you use?
