I'm getting tired of closing the door on my seat belt because its too lazy to retract like it should. I've pulled it out and made sure its not tangled but it just seems like its weak and doesn't want to retract all the way. is there a fix for this? Is it as simple as pulling the panel and greasing the mechanism?
simple answer is to put a cage and harness in the car but for the time being i need to correct this.

lubing it is a good start. but if it don't work you might try a salvage yard and get one out of a low mile car or the stealership ( which won't be cheap)

Yep. Very common problem. Mine exibits the same behavior on both sides. Seems like on the less humid days it functions much better.

I saw updated OEM replacements somewhere for about $75 a pop. Can't remember for the life of me where.

Same problem here. When I get new seats I am investing in a harness lol.

but you can't pass inspection w/ a harness. you have to have a functioning factory installed seatbelt system. not to say you can't have both but thats just nasty

The typical 5 pt harness is not DOT approved, a state safety inspector should fail it, just like an undersized steering wheel or HID's in a non HID housing.
I plan on taking mine apart on sunday and seeing what the issue is, hopefully its just gummed up.

Before it would have mattered now I have my exhaust and I go to a private inspection, so it's all good.

I talked to a friend that works at a local Ford dealer and was told that the springs were weak to begin with. He said to try extending the belt all the way out and let it retract but thats virtually all you can do for it. Besides replacement.

Mine does the same thing, so i usually pull it over onto the seat.. or i just don't wear my seat belt half the time. These seat belts seem to be really uncomfortable where they are located.

There are harnesses on the market that will pass the inspection. Schroth I think has a street set of belts. Passing the inspection should not be your biggest concern. Safety is compromized when you are using harness with out a proper roll bar with the main hoop. I would stick to factory belt for the street.
