Been running into some problems with my car lately, with what i believe is lifter tick. At first i thought it was possibly spark knock but i dont think thats it. The car doesnt tick or knock it all when cold. When warm however after a min or two of driving it will get a decently loud ticking noise on a load or even during idle if i give it a fast rev. It mostly occurs between 1k and 2800 rpm. When the rpms are up it wont tick or make any noise. Im running on my 91 tune right now and have been putting 93 octane in it. My dad thought it could possibly be the egr valve next to the firewall as its deleted and running open and havent capped it yet, but wouldnt it make the noise when cold too? Im pretty sold thats it a lifter getting stuck. Any body have advice on trouble shooting this?

I think you should take your dads advice before diving into the problem too much.

I'd also take your valve covers off. Check to make sure everything is in the right place and tight. I had an abnormal tick and it ended up being a rocker that was loose and it came out of place, luckily no damage.

Cap your egr.. Exhaust leak will sometimes sound like bad lifter

Im capping it this weekend. Just doesnt seem like it would be the egr which would be an exhaust leak. The reason i say that is because if it was indeed that wouldnt it tick as soon as i start it up cold? Only ticks and knocks when warm.

My truck has a small exhaust leak, only ticks when it wants to. Just has to be the right temp, or somewhere embarrassing...

Not so sure about that. I think the EGR is only active when the engine is hot.

May be wrong, but it is computer controlled. How long have you had it uncorked? I would imagine you would have heard it by now.

What about oil, what brand/viscosity is in it?

I suppose thats possible. Ive had it open since i got it back from the tune about a month ago, havent driven it much since then. Im currently running synthetic 10w30.

When's the last time you had a valve adjustment?
The EGR only works during operating temp while the engine is under load (cruising speed for example). The engine isn't (technically) under load in neutral or park. Fix your current issues that your aware of. Engines will generally not tick when they are warm unless there is a major issue.
