I just had the same problem in my ranger after my brother and father drove it back cross country. They had some electrical problems with the wipers and checked some fuses but swore everything was fine in there. When they got back I noticed that I had no high beams at all but my dad swore they worked for him. I pulled and checked ever fuse(always a good place to start), and the took out the headlight switch as well as teh high/low beam selector and they all worked.

When I pulled out my manual and started to read the fuse section I noticed one fuse that I had not checked, as it was not in the fusebox. I pulled out an extra fuse and pushed it in and BAM, the brights worked. I installed car audio/security for 15 yrs and never had the source of the problem be a missing fuse.
