I'm looking at an 01 mustang gt. the guy is a whole Saler so he doesn't know much about the car. it has 120k longtubes throttle body, intake and short shifter. the car runs pretty good I drove it today. interior and exterior are about 9.5/10 it looks awsome. check engine light came up at cylinder 5 miss fire but I couldn't even tell with it running. my only complaint is the oil was very old and filthy it was just dark but the oil cap had that milky tan stuff on it. I got him down to 3200. also it took a little while for the car to start up after the car was hot could that be bc of the longtubes?

The tan stuff on the oil cap is normal. It's moisture that builds up. Nothing to be alarmed about unless it's overheating and the oil is full of coolant. I'd say it probably has a bad coil on cylinder 5. Easy way to find out is Swap coils with anther cylinder and see if it follows. I'd bet the hard start problem is the same reason for the misfire. Looks like it as a few nice mods on it. I'd say jump on it for 3,200. You could turn around and resell it for $5-5.5k with it running well.

it felt good some surface rust I'd say a little more then my 96 bc it's from jersey but no rot that I saw. the coolant looked new and green and the oil on the dipstick was just very old and needs to be changed. it's been in the 20's the past few days here and maybe 35 when I looked at the car. there's rtv around the cases of the trans so I belive it's been rebuilt before he said the clutch may need to be changed it feels stiff but bites very well. interior is 9.5/10 paint is 9/10 and it has some goodies on it. so you don't think I should worry at all? the car has been sitting for around 4 months and only started a few times

For that price jump on it. A good body and good interior is worth that easily and parts are getting cheap and easy to find for that.

Hell I'd be willing to bet between everyone on this site selling parts you could rebuild every part of that car and never have to touch a junkyard.

No the tan in the oil cap is extremely common. If oil was milky you'd have issues.

Stop thinking bout it and just do it. [emoji106]

Like you said, you got a totaled 96 in your driveway so you got a spare block if you needed it.

Just like with women, a great body and a good interior are hard to find!!! :)

I love the people that are scared of high mileage 2v's. They don't think about the Police Cars or the Cabs running around with 300k+ miles on em. These engines can take a lickin and keep on tickin, just like a Timex. It's all in the maintenance.

Sounds like a good deal. Id go for it assuming clean title and not a crap ton of owners

Curious what a lot of owners means. I mean, if the car checks out and is in good shape does it really matter if there were 100 previous owners? I know it wouldn't phase my decision. If the car runs and looks good that's all that matters. Especially at that price! :)

A lot of owners can mean a problem child/lemon car and that is why it is a good reason to get a quality report on it before buying, not a guarantee but it can be a real help sometimes. I have learned the hard way after just purchasing my 35th car recently, didn't have the reports back in the day and sawdust in the differential and oatmeal in the radiator was possible.

It could be the same way even with 2 owners. And what's a carfax going to tell you about the mechanical side of things? Also, it's very simple to get around those reports if you wanted. Not all body shops are entering your Vin and info like big name shops. You could be jumping in a car that's had the front end ripped off but because Jimmy took it to his brothers, girlfriends cousins shop, you're not going to see it on the Carfax. I think going by the amount of owners when trying to buy a car is pretty pointless. I mean if you find a car that looks and runs good and you pass on it because of the amount of owners I think that would be foolish. If it checks out after doing a thorough inspection and taking it for a ride then you're good. Now if you don't take the time looking over it then you're bound to get ripped off. I've bought and sold countless cars in my 38 years and have never had someone ask how many previous owners there were.

I looked at the car pretty well. the rear looked dry she the motor had a very little bit of a power steering leak but not a big one at all not even close to my 96 which was all wet at the bottom lol. the trans was also damp but nothing to really be upset about. and it had a vacuum leak that was clearly visible to me I just need some hose clamps to fix it and it needs an oil change. the car has been sitting a while

When you say it took a long time to start when it was hot, do you mean it cranked longer than usual but it was spinning fine or it was crnaking slowly? Also, the transmission having rtv doesnt really mean someone has been in it. There arent any gaskets for the transmission housings so they are sealed with rtv, even from the factory.

it cranked fine but took a little bit to turn over. I wonder if the vacuum leak has anything to do with it. my biggest concern was the pudding like stuff on the fill cap
