I dont know if there are Macco paint shops anywhere other than Illinois but does know if they do decent paint work? They are a big corporate company but supposidly they are the cheapest around. The paint chips on my bumper are finally getting the best of me!

My cousin, who currently has my car, hates them!! They ship the cars through like cattle. It's just not want I would want done for my cars. That's my opinion though!!

They are a franchise, not a chain, there's a difference. You pay to put their name up on your bodyshop, different one's are different quality.

However, if you think you're going to roll out ready to take best of show at Carlisle after their 299 Ambassador paint service, think again. For 300 bucks they are going to scuff, it tape it, and shoot it. I don't blame them either, body work requires some real time and patience. You can save yourself some dough by pulling your door handles, tailights, headlights, etc before it get's there.

When you know perfectly well a quality paintjob cost's at least 2k, don't expect the same quality for 300 dollar's...

Lot's of people build and sell transmissions cheaper than me, I'm sure they work fine to go down the road in a stock car not being abused ever... But that's about it.

Well, if you had all the necessary space and tools you could do an excellent job yourself. All you would be spending money on was materials. Yes, black does show up flaws very well, but that can be fixed easily by sanding the bumper smooth as a babies butt, then priming it, and sanding it flawlessly again. Then send them the bumper to be painted, and it should look fine. Orange peel is a result of the temperature and them not setting the guns air pressure correctly.

So it would be mostly their fault if you did a spectacular job sanding the bumper, and they messed it up painting it.

my exes dad made his own paint booth. laid some plywood for the approximate room he needed. stood some 8ft 2x4s in the ground in the corners. then used a tarp for a roof and shrink wrapped in a around the studs. cut a hole in the shrink wrap for a box fan and sanded and painted his car with a big air compressor.

just call around. any decent body shop should paint a bumper PROPERLY for about $200-250. Stock quality paint in a factory color isn't expensive when you stay w/ the same color.
i bought a car that was painted at macco. i had the worst time stripping that crap off. it was their single stage paint. it actually washed off w/ purple power cleaner.

Honestly, you can get a good paint job from maaco....they just do like no prep work.

If you were to remove all the trim, lights, etc. from your car , strip it, sand, sand, sand, sand, and more sanding to get the car prepped and ready

THEN

take it to maaco and have them spray it....I really dont see why you wouldnt get good results...if theres orange peel get some 1500 grit sand paper and sand and buff that shit down.

I think the problem is that they pretty much just spray a coat of paint on top of whatever you already have there and call it a day.

I may try and strip and prep my bumper/ wing and have them repaint it...cause they both look like shit. and the clearcoat is gone on them.

Anyone know what would be the best way to prep a plastic bumper for paint?

Just sanding or what?

pull it off and put it on a saw horse(saw horse inside the bumper, w/ bumper hanging downward). pick up a flexible sanding block, its like 1/2" rubber 3"x5" ish.
wash it really good w/ dawn or similar soap, get everything clean, front and back. if its not flaking then just knock the shine off of it w/ some 200, if its flaking then you need to start w/ 150 or even lower keep it wet so it doesn't gum up on the paper. then move up to 200. don't primer it, you want them to use the primer that matches their specific paint.

if its spider webbed from a hit you need to look at the back of the bumper and check that it hasn't stressed through the material, also check to see that its not weak feeling in that area. if it has you need a new bumper because the web will show through on the repaint. if not then see above.

i seriously would not take anything to macco though. I got show quality paint work done on my camaro's bumper for $200 and all i had to do was remove it and take it to the guy. it was spider webbed from a direct hit to the rear at about 5mph. the guy even buffed out the car for free because the bumper looked so good against the rest of the car.

Well, the clearcoat is like white which means its gone on top

Would it actually save me any money if I removed the bumper or sanded it?

or should I just take it to someone and let them do thier work?

if you've never done it before or been around it its best to leave it alone.
yes, it will save you money to remove the bumper and take it in, sometimes as much as $50. when you go to pick it up just install it in the parking lot there, someone will probably be happy to help you. don't forget to either buff or replace the side marker lights as they will look like crap against the fresh paint.
