I have an alpine head unit and I think I wired a blue wire for the amps, it was 2 years ago already so I forgot but I remember that a remote wire was used too. As for the amps thing, I have factory speakers with a 10" sub and 450w monoblock(alpine) and my stereo sounds TONS better than most brand new car stereos, and I work for Ford, so I have seen many different radios. I got my adapter for like $10 at walmart and it works great, after getting the wiring correct for the factory amps it worked and has worked flawlessy for 2+ years.

The amps might be getting to the end of their life cycle......
You might look into upgrading everything at this point....

Just an idea....
