99-up mid pipes are also bent differently, in addition to the hanger's being different.

Mine came from a 98 Cobra and I just had the exhaust guy cut the o2 sections and turn them, then he put new dowels in.

It's pretty subtle, I had a 99-up on mine with just extensions for the O2's, but when I went to the T56, I had to get the correct mid-pipe for my year, because it wouldn't clear the crossmember. It also sometimes thumped the floorboards, but you are correct, on the whole it was no biggie.
