Re: MOTOR OIL

After reading this artical (and others), I have purchased 6 qts. of 0W-30 Mobil 1 / Motorcraft filter. I have run the M1 5W-30 for years and as of now have 161,6xx miles on it. It uses 3/4 qt. of oil between 6K changes. We will see how it goes.

It's also due a set of NGK's too..........

Re: MOTOR OIL

FTR: Mobil 1 recommends using their filters because of the micron filtration rating. Other filters (Fram, Motorcraft, etc.) do not have a high enough micron rating. Kinda defeats the purpose of using a good oil.

Re: MOTOR OIL

I'm sure they do.... thats just good marketing! I'll take that under consideration.

I did a little research on the Motorcraft/Purolator filter. Being a $4 hybrid filter, it does a real good job down to the 20 micron level. The only others out there that are really "better' at filtering are the Mobil 1 and the K&N. Both at the 10 to 18 micron / $10 price level. These are also more subject to restrictions due to this filtering level. - GT

Re: MOTOR OIL

I use only Purolater pure one filters, filters down to 10 microns without being restictive and about $5

That just means it's doing it's job. If you have the right oil to match, it won't be a problem unless you already have existing problems within your engine. I'm not partial to Mobil 1 or any oil for that matter but there are some people that buy an expensive oil and get a cheap filter which limits the oil's potential.

Re: MOTOR OIL

When these flow restrictions present themselves, and they tend to more often with a fully synthetic filtering media because it's denser to start with, the filter is bi-passed to prevent oil starvation. That means recirculated oil. Thats not good either. The Purolator / Motorcraft filters have been proven to still be filtering quite well up to 8000 mi. whereas many others give out and resort to the bi-pass at 4 or 5K, without the driver knowing it obviously. So it's a good bang for the buck. No matter if you use a Tier 1 or Tier 2 filter, filtering technology still has a way to go yet.

There are many folks out there that run the entry level no name synthetic oils and, since synthetic oils really don't "break down" like a dino oil, all they do is change the filter and replace what oil is lost from the filter change. I've read about some who have exceeded 100K in this manner and the engine still runs very well with no failures. They surely couldn't have been filtering it with the cheapest Fram filter. (nothing but a screen) So using synthetic oils alone is doing your engine a big favor within itself.

Given even todays engine tolerances though, anything under 10 micros couldn't even stack straight up perfectly in a line 4 high to get hung anywhere.

Re: MOTOR OIL

Well, it's in there. Oil pressure is instantanious upon start-up. That slight "roll" modulars have at idle seems lessened somewhat.

Why Ford allowed as much as 6* of cam timing between cyl. banks, I DO NOT KNOW. Most likely cost. When my new modular goes in, it will have a set of adjustable timing gears and they will be within 1/2* of each other. I'll make sure of that.

After some new NGK plugs, I will resume the 8 weeks of fuel mileage measurements as I did in the summer of '08. Best avg. on paper so far has been 27.7 mpg.

Re: MOTOR OIL

I need to spend time to read this but, no one said anything about the K&N oil filters. I only run K&N and Pure Ones...

I'm gonna give the 0w30 a shot. I watch my mpg every tank so i'll see if it changes. I also get the standard modular tap until it warms up... i wonder if that will go away.

I am also running the 0W-30 Mobil 1/Motorcraft filter in my wifes '08 Escape. So far so good. Have seen a .5 mpg increase on average.

^ Not trying to highjack but, the Continental tires on the '08 Escapes SUCK! Alignment is dead on. The tires "sing" loudly and the rears chop up. I've rotated them like a madman. Replacements are soon coming. I hope you got the OEM Michelins on the '09......

Autozone is having a sale on Mobile 1 get the 5qt jug and oil filter for $30 but the didn't have the 0w30 in any of my area stores so i went with 5w30. I usually buy 10w30 so i'll see if it makes a difference at all. Probably change it over the weekend if weather is ok.
