This is a PUI but i want to do this none the less. I have a list of mods that im planning for my new 97(to me) gt 4.6. my old gsx caught on fire due to megasquirt/poor tuning. Im starting on it in november and the parts list is as follow.

BBK shortys and x pipe.
Bassani catback
Steeda u/d pulleys and intake
cobra bumper
cassini(cobra style) hood from am.com
smoked headlights
3.73 gears
spark plug wires/plugs
h&r race springs with Bilstein shocks and struts

The reason for this thread is i found all of this on am.com for around 1900. (with exception of bassani catback) this will be the first winter build but am open to suggestions. If i am misguided and better off going with a diff brand on anything let me know please.or anything im leaving out.

Sincerely

These Nuts

Sounds like your going to order some parts. What is your goal for this car? There really arent many power adding parts taht you listed so you are going for more of a clean, show car?

for the time being im keeping it clean. so nothing of the pi/blower expense range(yet). It has 190000 miles(still strong) so if i need a new motor eventually ill do it while its out of the car. My goal is to have a well rounded gt. The suspension is priority one as my struts are worn out and i sway and bounce everywhere.

Alright that sounds like an ok list.

here is what i would change
BBK shortys and x pipe.------ Leave stock manifolds
Bassani catback------ get a bigger wallet, they are expensive but if you like it then be happy
Steeda u/d pulleys and intake---- intake as in CAI, thats fine, ud pullies, meh you can do with out them
cobra bumper--- ok if you like how they look
cassini(cobra style) hood from am.com --- same thing
smoked headlights---- look ok but useless at night
3.73 gears--- sounds good
spark plug wires/plugs---- ONLY buy factory stuff
h&r race springs with Bilstein shocks and struts--- if you can deal with the ride quality then ok.

screw a CAI unless you just like how they look. every single one heat sinks terrible and really doesn't improve flow that much since it's still choked off at the throttle body. I agree with Duff on just about everything else.

CAI's that are made of metal will become heat soaked as the under hood
temps go up.The metal CAI's can hinder performance because the IAT sensor on the intake tube will notice the intake charge temp is higher and will inform the PCM so changes in the timing values can be changed accordingly.
Any CAI that is made of plastic like the JLT CAI will retain less heat.
Get any CAI that is made of plastic and avoid that metal CAI's like the plauge!

Don't go with a bbk xpipe. They have a stamped x, and sound aweful. I have a mac x pipe and I like it, alot of people like bassani x pipes.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. I went to change my thermostat today and broke the seal between the old o ring and a tiny crack. needless to say water went (when cranked) everywhere and AAA had to come tow it to my mechanic. so this is being put off for a month or two and a dorman intake manifold is going on. anybody have one installed? the mech speaks highly of them. Im curious

I have the dorman installed. Some other members on here speak against them, but I haven't noticed any problems with it. I have had it on for about 6 months now, and no leaks anywhere (I check my engine every few days or so). It was straight forward, came with gaskets. Had it on and off in one night (at 3am w/ my brother in law handing me tools).

Why not go ahead and install a pi intake? They're cheap and a little more room to breathe up top wouldn't hurt.

From the sound of his post, he already has the Dorman.

Duff is pretty much right on with everything and he's saving you some money too. With 190K on the odo I wouldn't do much with the motor other than save for a new one. Also take his advice on where to use OEM parts, costs a little bit more upfront but worth it when you're not repeatedly replacing inferior parts.

Case in point, I had (what I thought) to be a bad coil pack on my '97 last fall. Nah. Turned out the problem was elsewhere, and that one of my Duralast (Auto Zone) replacement coils crapped out after only 7 months and about 10K. Put my original coil pack back in, problem solved!

And, as said, CAI's are useless. I had a BBK on mine for a while and took it off. Better off with the stock rubber tube, it won't heatsoak like aluminum does. Get a fresh air filter, clean your MAF, and call it a day for less than $15.
