I think it stands for High Definition Resolution. It'll make the pics look like the one's Soddy did.
Actually, it stands for High Dynamic Range.
High Dynamic Range refers to the range of variation between 3 or more exposures. By combining these three exposures, you get the highlights, mid tones, and shadows of all three exposures combined into one image, which then takes on a glossy, over-contrasted appearance.
The technique is actually supposed to be used when there is a situation that involves blown out highlights or bright light, with very dark shadows, i.e. a picture of the sky through a window in a room. In this situation, the sky and outside light would be so bright that, if focused on and adjusted for, the rest of the image (the room) would be nearly black. To compensate, we take 3 exposures, one adjusted for the outside light, one in a mid-range setting, and one adjusted for the proper exposure of the room. By combining these 3 exposures, the image retains the proper exposure for both the outside light, and the room.
However, when used in a situation such as that with a car, which has a lot of reflections and light variations, the image becomes more fanciful in appearance.

EDIT: Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
