alright guys, so im 16, and ive saved up about $1600.

my dad got a good deal on renting a shop and he said he'll paint the car for the cost of materials only.

my dads been a body guy for almost 30 years, and has painted show cars. were talking a very nice paint job here!

i can also, with the extra money, buy new rims and tires for the car. most likely 03 cobras, 17/9 front and 17/10.5 rear.

-----OR------

i could do a full pi swap, or other performance mods. the car now is somewhat stock with a simple cold air intake and a an off road h pipe with flows.

-------------

its a 160k mile car, but runs very strong with no issues whatsoever. but obviously the paint and body is a little ragged and the engine is a little tired.

the right quarter has a good crease in it from the previous owners wife, (women....) who was learning to drive manual. some people just dont need to drive. lawlz.

-------------

either way i go it will be a major improvment over what i had before.

so help me guys, performance, or cosmetic!

I'd say go for performance, unless you've got seriously bad paint, but its really all up to your priorities.

I personally would do the GT PBR dual Piston brake upgrade...PI SWAP...and find yourself some used in good condition 03 Cobra's.

Like for instance here there is a set of machined 03 cobra's brand spanking new tires. 17x9 and 17x10.5 with brand new drag Radials for 750
PBR brake upgrade maybe 80 bucks. That would leave about 800 or so to do your PI swap.

Ahhh! I have 95 GT and have the same dilemma, paint or H/C/I. I can do both but only one in March and the other in June. I decided to go build the motor since when I am slamming gears I don't give two shits about my paint.

I recommend going with performance parts, because we all know racing stripes don't add HP anymore.

when i was 16 i did a lot of wood working projects with my dad... it was a lot of fun, and I'll never forget it... given your age (not necessarily maturity granted...) i recommend cosmetic upgrades

yeah, to make it clear, if i do the paint, i CAN buy new wheels and tires as well.

but if i do performance, i can ONLY buy the pi swap and be broke.

IMHO, if your dad is a body guy, and you don't go with something crazy there is no reason why you can't do both the paint, and the PI swap so that's what i would suggest i guess. I wouldn't suggest either unless you yourself will put in the majority of the wrench time/ elbow grease.

You can find nice wheels on the cheap everywhere used, Id do those and 99-04 brake upgrade later on at the same time.

Do the paint materials should cost you more than about 600 and you might have enough to pick up some used wheels and tires.

no, but stickers for parts you dont even have do :)
being 17, i know how fun it is to walk on every car in the high school parking lot (except that damn GTO). plus, when your car is a little worn down it surprises everyone. Money making opportunity?
Its obviously your car, so the final call is yours, but if it were mine id add some power to it and not tell anyone

I agree, I`ve got a soon to be 16 year old son. Would love nothing more than to see him get a mustang that I could teach him to work on himself, but alas he`s into video games more than driving right now. But I say get the paint done, work with your dad, it's something you will never forget. With the left over money you could easily get used wheels, and a PI swap if your willing to wait to find the best deal.

it sounds like completely mixed opinions here.

i dont know how much of any of this i would actually be doing with my dad.

we dont have the tools to do a pi swap (nor the room) and i have no interest in paint/body.

how much do you see nice cars getting stolen these days? im leaning towards paint but im not sure i want to risk it.
ill put locking wheel nuts and things on my rims, but anyone can scratch up paint.
